My 10-Year Journey After Kidney Transplant

My 10-Year Journey After Kidney Transplant: The Hidden Secret of Staying Healthy I have successfully completed ten years of my journey after a kidney transplant, and I am grateful to say that I am living comfortably without major complications. I do not suffer from blood pressure problems, diabetes, or kidney function issues at present. Many people ask what the hidden secret behind this stable and healthy life is. The truth is simple but powerful: consistent discipline, strict adherence to medical advice, and a balanced lifestyle. There is no magic — only regular habits followed sincerely every day. The first and most important secret is that I take my medicines exactly as prescribed by my doctor. I never skip a dose, never delay it, and never adjust it on my own. Medication after a kidney transplant is not optional — it is life-supporting. These medicines protect the transplanted kidney and maintain balance in the body. I follow the timetable strictly.   For weight loss decisions, experts recommend finding ways to fit your lifestyle

People determined to lose some weight in the New Year are faced with a dizzying array of fashionable diet and fast weight loss programs.

Nutrition experts told HealthDay Now that those who weigh eating patterns and diet plans, such as intermittent fasting, ketogenic diet, Whole 30 Program, and Mediterranean diet, have two main facts in mind.

First of all, the diet that suits you depends to a large extent on what you like to eat and what is best for your personal lifestyle.

"The most effective thing for people is what you will stick to and what makes you comfortable. So, if you want to change your diet, you must first understand yourself and do what you will stick to," the doctor said.  Lawrence Cheskin is the chair of the Department of Nutrition and Food Research at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

Cheskin said: "If you plan to stick to it for a week and then open business as usual, then any of these diets will be useless."

Second, any diet or eating pattern can only help you lose weight if you consume less calories day after day.

A good weight loss diet will include all the nutrients needed to stay healthy, but limit calories.

"Anytime we reduce calorie intake, we will see weight loss," said Caroline Susie, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the College of Nutrition and Nutrition in Dallas.

Experts point out that the two most scientific dietary patterns-intermittent fasting and the Mediterranean diet-were not originally used as a means of weight loss.

  Fasting has ancient origins

Intermittent fasting requires people to eat only at certain times of the day, or to drastically limit their calorie intake on certain days of the week.

"Intermittent fasting is really a period of time. The interesting thing is that this diet has always existed. In fact, many religions have practiced intermittent fasting for many years," Susie said.  "Although this diet has ancient historical value, it really has a 15-minute reputation now."

"The advantage is that it won't tell you what to eat. It will tell you when to eat. If you don't like the list or my plan or not in my plan, this may be a choice for you," Susie continued  Say.

Cheskin said studies have shown that intermittent fasting can help people control their weight, just like a typical diet.  He follows this eating pattern and only eats between 7 am and 7 pm.  every day.

"It may be effective because it is not that laborious. If you have to stick to a very strict diet plan 100%, we all know that most people don't do it for a long time, and they won't enjoy it," Cheskin said.

However, Susie pointed out that people with eating disorders should avoid fasting, as this may cause food problems for them.

  Heart-healthy choices

The most scientific behind the Mediterranean diet is touted as a means of maintaining heart health-but again, its purpose is not to lose weight.

According to the American Heart Association, this diet is based on the cuisine of Mediterranean countries and is usually rich in unsaturated fats such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts, and olive oil.

You can also eat small to moderate amounts of dairy products, eggs, fish and poultry.

"It's a healthy diet, but it's not designed for weight loss," Cheskin said.  "Countries that lean towards the Mediterranean diet are not thinner than any other country."

"If you only have healthy fats, they have as many calories as unhealthy fats. This is a good way to eat, but if you want to use it to lose weight, then you must also reduce fat and calories," Cheskin  Say.

Susie pointed out that the Mediterranean diet has been shown to reduce inflammation, which is associated with many different chronic diseases.

"I think this is a wonderful way of eating, and you can enjoy a glass of wine anywhere," Susie said.  "I think this is my favorite because it is very inclusive."

  Ketones are not new

The Keto diet is another popular weight loss program, although Susie warns that this is not a new concept.

"This diet has been around for a while," Susie said, previously named after the Atkins diet or the South Beach diet.  "I think it has a great marketing manager because this diet is often renamed."

The keto diet strictly limits the intake of carbohydrates while increasing the intake of fat and protein.

The goal is to reach a state of ketosis, “a metabolic state in which you burn fat for energy instead of burning carbohydrates for energy,” Susie said.

"Basically, you are asking your body to consume fat, not the main carbohydrates in your diet," Cheskin said.

However, a keto diet can be difficult for a person.

"It can be a bit cruel to get there," Susie said, noting that people who are just starting to eat usually get the "keto flu" for a few days, during which they feel dizzy, drowsy and headaches.  Other common side effects are disturbance and constipation.

"When we remove some of these foods, we take away key nutrients and remove a lot of fiber," which can lead to constipation, Susie said.

Cheskin added that Keto's emphasis on fat is not very good for your heart.

"In some ways, this is a heart attack diet," he said.  "Eat all the bacon you want, just don't eat potatoes — well, your diet is the opposite of what preventive cardiology tells you."

Cheskin said that if people eat less, people will lose weight on Keto, "but if you use a healthier diet to lose similar weight, you may get greater health benefits."

Watch out for the whole 30

Cheskin and Susie are the most picky in the Whole 30 Program. In this diet, participants do not add sugar, grains, beans, and dairy products for a month.

"The whole 30 diet is a bit worrying because it was founded by people with limited nutrition education," Susie said.  "This is extremely strict. In 30 days, you will eliminate many different food categories."

Susie said that this diet requires you to eat less legumes or low-fat dairy products, which are generally considered nutritional heavyweights.

"I do like this diet and it does encourage you to eat more fresh fruits and fresh vegetables. But to demonize the entire category for no clinical reasons, this is where some red flags appear," Susie said.

"Unless you have allergies, there is no clinical reason to avoid dairy products, why you need to avoid beans and why you need to avoid complex carbohydrates," Susie said.

Cheskin said that the Whole 30 diet "will reduce inflammation and cause weight loss, depending on how many calories you consume." "It is not specifically used for weight loss, but it can definitely be used for weight loss. It is produced by a sports nutritionist.  Designed."

Cheskin says that after the first 30 days, people can start reintroducing the beans and other foods they took out of their diet.

The best diet: the one you stick to

However, experts say that for most people, this restrictive diet is difficult to maintain, and people tend to give up over time.

Susie said her eating habits are simple:

Breakfast is low-sugar Greek yogurt with some nuts added.

Lunch is a whole-wheat bread sandwich, next to vegetables such as salad, cucumber slices or cherry tomatoes.

An afternoon snack with a piece of fruit and a piece of cheese.

A dinner includes half a plate of fruits and vegetables, a quarter plate of lean meat, and a quarter plate of complex carbohydrates such as potatoes—"I like potatoes," Susie said.  Susie concluded that there is nothing cheating day for her.

"I firmly believe that all foods are suitable. If I crave something, I will respect that craving, and no matter what it is, I will eat a small amount," Susie said.

"If I go out to eat and someone wants to share a few bites of dessert, it won't disappoint me. I will have a meal or snack next time," Susie said.

Experts suggest that protein is the key.  She said: "Make sure you eat enough protein, because this macro group helps keep us full, so we are unlikely to eat snacks."

  One dessert a day

She added: "Keep sugar low-choose sweets only once a day, one serving.

"Ideally, choose whole foods such as fruits."

  Cook at home

She said: "In my app, we have a personalized meal plan, and people are very good at sticking to it.

"But it's between the two meals that people are struggling with.

"The other thing-I do the same-is after dinner. For me, I need some sweets after dinner, even if it's just mint tea or something."

The five best diets that nutritionists will focus on in 2021 (and the three to avoid at all costs)

The past year has undoubtedly been an interesting year, and from a dietary point of view, things have not been smooth sailing.  More time at home means that many of us can devote more time and energy to food preparation and healthy eating, which is just a good thing.

Interest in plant-based diets continues to grow exponentially, with more plant-based and nut milks becoming a regular part of coffee orders.  More than ever, you can find zero-alcohol wine and beer, as well as low-calorie alcoholic water and wine soda, some of which are quickly replacing our favorite wines or spirits.  The snack food section of supermarkets continues to expand, with more and more products claiming to have less sugar, more protein, and fewer "bad" fats.

However, this is not all good news, because people are becoming more and more accustomed to delivering meals directly to our doorsteps, as well as desserts and alcohol, leading to a large amount of fat and calories sneaking into our diet every week.  What followed was a few extra kilograms of weight, which were collectively blamed on COVID, even though it has been almost two years since the pandemic began.

At the beginning of the shiny new year, before you spend money on another weight loss plan that promises to make you look like a supermodel by the end of January, the following is a scientifically proven diet plan that can provide you with health and weight related  The results you want, and some diets to avoid.

  1. Low-carb diet

Low-carbohydrate or medium-carbohydrate diets contain 30-40% carbohydrates, which are usually gradually reduced at night.  Plans such as CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet follow this formula.  This is an effective and sustainable way to transfer half a kilogram of body weight every week while still enjoying some fruits, breads and cereals in your diet plan.  How to make Adam Liaw's vegetable and egg salad, as shown in the picture.

  2. Mediterranean diet

Although it is not specifically known for losing weight, you cannot go beyond the Mediterranean diet in terms of health outcomes.  A simple formula includes lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, lots of extra virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, fish and little or no processed foods. It is the secret of a healthy heart and longevity.

  3. 5:2 or fasting diet

Best diet for weight loss

Fasting has been shown to help activate many hormones in the body, including those that regulate fat metabolism.  The 5:2 diet includes a low-calorie diet two days a week, while the 16:8 diet consumes all calories within 8 hours and then fasts for 16 hours.  Although you will not lose 1-2 kg by fasting every week, if you can consistently follow one of these methods, you can lose a few kg per month without excessive dieting.

  4. Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD)

Best diet for weight loss

Not for everyone, a very low-calorie diet contains about 800 calories and is usually sold as a plan in which all meals are replaced by a formula dietary shake, bar or soup over a period of time.  After following, VLCD can very effectively support a relatively rapid weight loss of 1-2.5 kg per week, and is especially effective for patients with type 2 diabetes.  For less intense weight loss, followers can only change one or two meals a day to support calorie control.

  5. Vegetarian

Best diet for weight loss

Unlike a vegetarian diet, a vegan diet does not include any animal foods, which means that the diet is based on legumes, grains, seeds, nuts, fruits, and vegetables.  Although these foods are very healthy and most of them have lower calories than diets containing animal protein, vegan diets are not necessarily lower in calories than other diets, which means that they can only cause weight loss if the calories are controlled.  .  How to make Adam Liaw's Piyaz salad and Andrew McConnell's tomato chickpea curry.

Diets to avoid at all costs:

  Lemon Detox Diet

Basically, this is a hungry diet.  Lack of all key nutrients, even dangerous for those suffering from hormonal diseases such as insulin resistance and diabetes, this diet does not have any positive meaning, especially since you may recover most (if not all) of what you lost  Weight once you start eating again.

Avoid long-term fasting of fruit juices because they lack protein, fat, vitamins and minerals.  Photo: Provided

  Juice fasting

Commonly referred to as "detoxification", the effect of a juice diet is similar to that of a lemon detox diet, but with slightly more sugar and calories.  The long-term fruit juice diet lacks protein, fat, vitamins and minerals, and again, once you start eating again, any weight you lost may be restored.

  Alkaline diet

An alkaline diet indicates that alkaline foods (those with the least acid-forming properties) help restore the body to an alkaline state.  Followers believe that alkaline physique is the key to new cell generation and disease prevention.  Although this sounds great, the reality is that the pH of the body is largely beyond our control, which means that an alkaline diet cannot do what it says.

Seven simple ways you can have a healthier 2022:

Play long games.  If you can follow it for a long time, all diets will work.  If your goal is to lose weight by 2022, look for sustainable options.

Focus on vegetables.  The easiest way to improve nutrition and support weight control is to double your daily vegetable intake to 7-10 servings per day.

Check your sugar intake.  It is recommended that adults consume no more than 5-6 teaspoons of added sugar or less than 25 grams per day.  Check food labels and look for foods with less than 5 grams of sugar per serving.

Plan your meals in advance.  Planning is the key to diet success.  Each week, set aside a few minutes to plan a few meals and organize your shopping list so that you have good food on hand.

Limit your takeaway.  Fast food and takeaway meals contain twice as many calories as meals you prepare at home.  Limiting these high-calorie options to at most once a week will greatly help improve your nutrition.

Reduce processed snacks.  We all eat more than we need.  Focusing on whole food snacks such as nuts, yogurt, cheese, fruits and vegetables is an easy way to control calorie intake.

Look for whole-grain foods.  If you choose the right carbohydrates, carbohydrates are also good.  Make whole wheat bread, cereals, and biscuits your staple food in your home.
